This one-day SecEd and Headteacher Update conference will share practical insights, ideas, and interventions to help you support the wellbeing and good mental health of children and young people in your school.

The prevalence of mental health problems is increasing, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic, with the latest NHS figures showing that as many as 1 in 5 children and young people have a probable mental health condition. There are particular concerns about anxiety, self-harm, eating disorders, and loneliness.

More widely, the cost of living crisis is driving increasing numbers of families into poverty with a range of consequences for the pastoral work of schools. At the same time, schools are also facing on-going challenges in meeting the often complex needs of students with SEND, which so often overlap with wider pastoral and mental health needs.

This event is aimed at anyone working in or leading pastoral care in primary and secondary schools. It will feature a range of school-led workshops and case studies, as well as presentations from other experts, all looking at ideas and approaches for effective and innovative pastoral care and practice.

We will consider both preventative work, including spotting the signs of emerging problems, as well as how we can ensure we have the proper support systems in place to help our children and young people and their families. Presentations will cover the range of pastoral issues schools face, including common mental health challenges & SEMH, poverty and disadvantage, SEND & inclusion, and more.

We will also look at how we can protect the academic progress of students who are struggling with their mental health and wellbeing.

We will share solutions, proven interventions and general good practice that schools can adapt for their own settings. We will also look at the growing role of the Senior Mental Health Lead in schools and how schools are working with the growing number of Mental Health Support Teams and other local partners to support children and young people.

The programme for this event is due to be published in June 2024.
